Celebrating Family Style

My dad and stepmother are coming to Texas for the 4th of July weekend. Dad's lived up in Cleveland, OH for, what, 10 years now? How the time does fly.

For their visit, my brother is going to have us all out to his place on the 4th. Being in the country, we can shoot of fireworks to our hearts' content. Better yet, he's got an awesome smoker and will be serving up some fine, fine "barbecue" (I'm hoping for brisket AND ribs.)

My job is to bring some side dishes. My brother made a request for me to make "Nanny Noodles." These are egg noodles my dad's mom has made for as long as anyone can remember. I've watched her do it a couple of times, and I'm 90 percent certain that they're known to the rest of the world as Wendish noodles. Here's the recipe:

One egg
One half egg shell of water (about 3 tablespoons)
One and one-half to two cups of flour

Beat egg and water together. Add a sprinkle of salt and enough flour to form a stiff dough. Roll out thin on a pastry cloth. Let stand to dry, turning over occasionally. Cut into thin strips when dry but still pliable. Cook in a rich chicken broth until tender. Chopped parsley, chopped green onion tops, and a dash of nutmeg may be added for flavor, if desired.


That's pretty much the way I remember Nanny doing it ... she never added the parsley, onion or nutmeg. It sounds simple enough, but I suspect that getting it just right will be tough. I've watched my grandmother make fried chicken and tried to reproduce it in my own kitchen -- I got close, but it wasn't just right. Probably has something to do with the fact that I'm not a 92-year-old woman.
